COW BOP received a big 'thumbs-up' and admirable nod of approval from SPIN's Jeff Berkwits following their 2008 Route 66 Challege Tour on behalf of the JazzMasters Workshop.
"Country and jazz aren't two musical styles that usually mingle all that well, but the western swing sensibilities of this band actually makes one wish such sounds would come together more often. This quintet, along with an array of guest stars including Dan Hicks (of Hot Licks fame), manage to imbue their melodies with a new, yet nostalgic sound that unabashedly borrows the best elements from lounge, bebop, and old-fashioned honky-tonk. Comprising primarily country and easylistening standards, the dozen tunes are, withone notable exception, absolutely breathtaking. Vocalist Pamela "Pinto Pammy" Forman offers wonderful takes on "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" and "When The Bloom Is On The Sage," while her guitarist husband Bruce provides terrifically tranquil fretwork on "Mood Indigo." The disc's final number, "Route 66 (Road Version)," is marred by an ersatz travelogue, but other than that the recording is transcendent."
